Facing an Amputation?
If you or a family member has been told that an amputation may be necessary, you may have many questions about what happens next.
Speaking to a prosthetist before surgery can help you understand the prosthetic process, what to expect during recovery, and when prosthetic assessment may begin.
You are welcome to contact Nagel Orthopaedic Services even before the amputation takes place.
After Your Amputation
The period after an amputation is an important part of your recovery. Your residual limb needs time to heal and change before a prosthesis can be fitted.
During this stage, Nagel Orthopaedic Services can provide guidance and work alongside your rehabilitation team as you prepare for prosthetic assessment.
You don't need to wait until you are fully healed before contacting us.

Your Prosthetic Assessment
Once your residual limb has healed sufficiently, we can assess your individual needs and discuss the prosthetic options suitable for you.
We consider factors such as your mobility, daily activities, goals and physical needs when planning your prosthetic care.
Every prosthetic journey is different, and your prosthesis should reflect your individual needs.
Your Prosthetic Fitting
Your prosthesis is individually fitted and adjusted to provide the best possible combination of comfort, function and stability for your needs.
During the fitting process, we assess the socket fit, alignment and prosthetic components and make adjustments as needed.
Getting the fit right is an important part of helping you use your prosthesis confidently in everyday life.

Rehabilitation & Learning to Use Your Prosthesis
Learning to use a prosthesis takes time and practice. Rehabilitation can help you develop balance, confidence and the skills needed for everyday activities.
We work alongside your physiotherapist and rehabilitation team to support your progress and make prosthetic adjustments when needed.
Your prosthesis may need to be adjusted as your mobility improves and your residual limb changes.
Ongoing Prosthetic Care
Your prosthetic needs can change over time. Changes in your residual limb, activity levels or everyday needs may affect the comfort and fit of your prosthesis.
Regular follow-up allows us to check your prosthesis, make adjustments where needed and help address problems with fit or function.
Nagel Orthopaedic Services is here to support you beyond your initial fitting.
